IOSONO GmbH

The Company

IOSONO GmbH
IOSONO GmbH was founded in 2004 to market the sound system named after the company all over the world. Professor Karlheinz Brandenburg, MP3 co-inventor, decisively contributed to IOSONO's success, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau. As an internationally renowned media engineer and director of this Fraunhofer Institute, he also had a substantial part in the development of the sound system.

Meanwhile, IOSONO GmbH is the fourth spin-off in the history of the Fraunhofer IDMT. The young company will work in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute also in the future and foster the development of the IOSONO® technology to create innovative solutions under the conditions of international markets.

The company, managed by Uwe Karbenk and Olaf Stepputat, is staffed by an international team of audio specialists and operates on a global scale from its locations in Erfurt and Los Angeles.

The Technology

IOSONO® is an entirely new approach to producing and reproducing sound as realistic as possible. Sounds can be positioned and moved freely, within and outside the actual limitations of a room. The technology enables an unprecedented maximum level of freedom for realizing creative ideas.

IOSONO® is based on the principle of the wave field synthesis enabling an extremely realistic audio reproduction and creating a perfectly natural sound impression across almost the entire listening space. There are no good and bad seats anymore, as the sweet spot is extended to the whole room. This results in completely new possibilities for the sound engineer's creative process. Independent of channel information, he is for example able to position and move sound objects within and outside the virtual space.

The famous Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, is equipped with 400 computer-controlled loudspeakers giving the audience the impression of being in the center of the movie's sound world. For each of the 300 seats there is optimal three-dimensional sound. Professor Karlheinz Brandenburg characterizes the innovation: "The step from current surround formats to IOSONO is as big as it was then from mono to stereo."

But new sound dimensions do not only open up for the theater, but also for night clubs: sounds, voices and instruments may be moved freely in the room - the wave field synthesis lets it virtually "walk across the dance floor" offering an entirely new sound experience to listeners and dancers. The IOSONO audio system creates a perfectly spatial sound impression for each listener, independent of the position in the room. A limited "optimum" area restricting the conventional sound dispersion, such as in multi-channel systems with 5.1 technology, does not exist any longer with the new IOSONO sound system.
