FFE – Fraunhofer Fosters Entrepreneurs

Aim of the development program

The aim of FFE is to provide project-specific support for technology transfer through spin-offs prior to starting up the company. With FFE, an internal project budget is available to create a detailed transfer concept (business plan) and realize final development activities. The process evaluates whether and how the relevant Fraunhofer technology may make a promising transfer through a spin-off – possibly with an investment by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

Important facts

  • FFE supports important steps for the systematic preparation of a Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft spin-off.
  • The focus is on analyzing the transfer potential and reducing the uncertainties linked to a spin-off. The technology should also advance to the next maturity level; insofar finalizing development work qualifies for funding to a limited extent.
  • For 12 weeks (other periods may be determined individually) you are expected to focus your time on FFE.
  • Up to €50,000 are provided as an internal project budget (co-payment of 50% is required from the institute). In the scope of FFE extended, follow-up funding in the amount of additional €100,000 is possible.
  • Continuous, individual coaching and sparring by a team of two with business management and legal competence is offered in parallel.
  • Comprehensive resources and information about the challenges of start-up entrepreneurs as well as access to the Fraunhofer Venture network are available as additional support for the ideal preparation of the spin-off.

What you need to apply

  1. A business model canvas already validated in customer relations with the nine elements according to “rapidmodeler” or “Business Model Canvas” (the focus should be on the most relevant elements and not on describing all elements in every single detail).
  2. A 10-page pitch presentation for introducing your idea to decision makers, customers, or investors (slide format; i.e. please strictly adhere to content and number of pages).
  3. A 1-page project calculation illustrating the intended use of the subsidies.
  4. A written letter of support from the management of the institute (including an overview of property rights).

Your project after FFE

  • You understand the basic challenges that come with starting up a company.
  • You understand the function and the added value of the business plan for the systematic preparation of a spin-off and started to develop your business plan.
  • You identified and eliminated further uncertainties linked to the start-up project by working intensely on your start-up concept.
  • You have established a relevant network within and especially outside of Fraunhofer.
  • You have gained certainty about the idea of being a start-up entrepreneur and have the right arguments for other internal and external investors.

FFE extended – follow-up funding for particularly promising FFE projects

  • FFE extended requires successful completion of FFE and provides follow-up funding. Direct application through the idea portal is not possible.
  • For another 20 weeks (other periods may be determined individually) you are expected to focus your time on FFE extended.
  • Up to three persons are supported in the scope of FFE extended.
  • Up to €100,000 are provided as an internal project budget (co-payment of 50% is required from the institute).
  • For particularly promising FFE extended projects, the possibility exists of a company-law investment by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in the spin-off.
