Spin-offs are a strategic aim of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft executive board and a potential way of bringing research results in the market. For the institutes, however, it often implies losing employees and commercial revenue as in most cases possible returns from investments are realized with a strong temporal delay. Based on easily measurable data, the spin-off bonus was created; it achieves an immediate financial effect for the institutes when the spin-off is founded.
Aim of the spin-off bonus
Spin-offs of Fraunhofer institutes should be promoted by a spin-off bonus based on the following considerations:
- Spin-offs are the political mission of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the Fraunhofer institutes are encouraged to take this way of technology transfer – despite the uncertainties linked to it.
- In particular in view of potential industrial revenue, the institute gets the possibility to compensate the loss of know-how that is inevitable when an employee leaves to start a spin-off. (solution for the conflict of objectives: spin-off <-> core business of the institute)
